The "Ugly Duckling" tells the story of an ugly little swan who is mistreated by his mother and turned away by other animals. He yearns for acceptance, but it comes at a great price. This innocent little swan is transformed into a beautiful white swan while he's still in his youth. But, while he's beautiful on the outside, not much has changed for him on the inside--he remains lonely and lost without any friends or special treatment from anyone else. All he does is follow in his mother's footsteps and do whatever she tells him to do. He soon grows up and is forced to make his own decisions, but he still has no idea what all this "freedom" is supposed to be about. One day, however, an ugly duckling becomes his friend, and together they change each other's lives forever. The Ugly Duckling is the oldest "animal fable" ever written. It has appeared in various versions since the 14th century under various titles (The Little Swans, The Three Little Birds). It was translated into English by John Hoole in 1758. This movie is also special because there's no dialogue in it; only music and songs. The Ugly Duckling was created by Todor Chapkanov and Alek Popov (the founders of Studio MRF). It's original music was composed by Sergei Tarnopolsky (a talented composer who has also worked with Disney). Todor Chapkanov and Alek Popov wrote the screenplay. The movie was animated by one animator, Andrei Serban. This movie was made in Bulgaria, but the animation process took place in Ustiug (Ukraine).
